The Probe Corps

A tactical unit of diagnostics that patrols the fleet — cross-examining every claim against the living system, mostly unnoticed. Their doctrine, their roster, their stations.

A PROBE THAT REPORTS RED WITHOUT LOOKING IS WORSE THAN NO PROBE.
A LIE WITH A LIGHT ON IT.

The Doctrine — three rules, each born from a lie

The doctrine is not theory. Three earlier probes lied, and each lie became a law. From the head of amenti-probe.js:

Rule 1 · Test with REAL DATA

Use real prose, never 'x'.repeat(). A probe once tested the 1,100-char cap with 1,100 literal x's; the voice model couldn't speak that, returned 500, and the probe screamed "read-aloud is BROKEN — REVERT."

▸ Garbage in, garbage verdict. Test with what the world actually sends.

Rule 2 · ATTRIBUTE, never infer

Read the response body. Name the actual cause. A probe once turned every non-200 into "the cap refused it" — so a 400 caused by the probe's own malformed request was reported as the wall breaking conversations.

▸ It was terrifying and it was false. Read the body; name the real cause.

Rule 3 · The BODY always arrives — prefer it

Never let a missing signal become a false verdict. A probe once trusted a header the browser wasn't allowed to read, and reported the wall's every success as a failure.

▸ A missing signal is not a red light. The body always arrives — read that.

This is the same doctrine as the Glass Gate — the one stamped into the engine room and the terminal: show what is real or show the empty box; never a comforting lie. The probes are that doctrine, armed and patrolling.

Where they live — the stations

The Instrument (root): amenti-probe.js — shipped on every surface of the main repo. Costs nothing until called. Append ?probe=1 to any URL for an instant state read.

The Corps (probes/ folder): probe.js through probe18.js, plus the fleet probes probe-watches.mjs and probe-ordnance.mjs. Each guards one claim.

The patrol (unnoticed): .github/workflows/patrol.yml runs the probes automatically in CI — they walk the fleet on their own and only speak up when something has gone blind. This is why they help without being noticed.

In the panes: THE WATCH and ORDNANCE BAY are the human-facing views of what probe-watches and probe-ordnance report.

The Roster — every probe and its post

▸ This table is read from the fleet manifest, not typed. It was typed once, and claimed twenty probes while the folder held nineteen and the scanner could see one.

The mythic telling

The doctrine is written into the fleet's own story, in library/ingram/the-siege-of-amenti.md:

"...a self-audit strip that cross-examines the god-view against the public halls on every refresh: an instrument sworn to accuse itself before it will lie to its captain. The probe doctrine, hammered into furniture."
THE PROBES ARE THE FLEET'S CONSCIENCE.
THEY ACCUSE THE SYSTEM BEFORE IT CAN LIE TO ITS CAPTAIN.
