Isaac Newton, traced through every gate

A name arrives from nowhere and ends up with a key, a row, a room, a face, a voice, and a place on the docket. Eight gates, and each one refuses something. This traces one figure through all of them and says, at each stop, what would happen if the step were skipped.

Plate — eight gates across the three keys. Gate 3 is the only one that decides whether he exists.

1The name

Isaac Newton, and nothing else. No key, no row, no room. At this point the system does not know him and would not say so — a figure who is absent generates no error anywhere, because absence is the default state of every name that has ever existed.

What this gate refuses

Nothing. This is the only stage with no gate, and that is why nothing can be checked yet.

2The key

The name is reduced to a key, and every surface must reduce it the same way. That rule was unwritten until 17 August and three separate incidents trace back to its absence — wd-gann drifting by one character, einstein-albert by word order, and gw-winter, which was not a figure at all.

The one that bites

The proxy derives its own key at amenti-proxy-worker.js:468 as name.toLowerCase().trim() — a lowercased full name with the space still in it: isaac newton. Plates, scenes and rooms use the hyphen. Both conventions are live. Any check that compares them without slugging both sides cannot match, and one of them recently reported that it had.

3The row — where he begins to exist

One line in names.csv, in the repo, under version control. The columns are read at amenti-proxy-worker.js:464, and every one is identity or craft.

Now he exists

This is the whole of it. Ammit is the roster — in it he has a voice, a card, a room, a byline; out of it he does not exist here. The roster answers one question and no others.

What the row may never carry

No score, rank, grade, tier or verdict column. Being on the list is not approval and being off it is not damnation — the list says who is here, the scales say what they did. Keeping them apart is what stops the roster becoming a moral register.

The commit is the publish. The proxy fetches the CSV from raw.githubusercontent.com/ianingram/Amenti.live/main/names.csv with a one-hour cache. Newton is live an hour after the commit, with no separate publish step to forget.

4The room

The failure this gate has already produced

einstein-albert held ten ingested texts, a full manifest and a README documenting its own carve-outs — and no catalog JSON. library.js 404'd and the room was unreachable. Everything a room needs except the one file that makes it resolvable. A convention is only a convention if something breaks when it is not followed.

5The face

Three required plates, one command each. ingest.py crops, resizes, measures saturation, computes the grade, stamps provenance and rewrites grades.css — so no HTML is ever edited to add a figure.

There is no codex variant. The codex reuses terminal. A register that
measured against a fourth invented variant once reported 0 of 51.

6The scenes — optional, and never a gap

A plate is a figure. A scene is a moment that figure was in. Newton under the tree at Woolsthorpe; the plague year; the Mint.

Newton need not be in the frame. An orchard, a fallen apple, low October light — still his scene. Ownership is editorial, not photographic.

7The voice

The Dialect and Voice columns compose the TTS profile. Nothing extra is written; the row already carried it. Read-aloud is the one place in the system where a living person gives something to the record — every spell in the Book of the Dead is spoken for the dead.

8The docket, and the two things that can silence him

A case is filed as a locator, never a sentence.
